PHARR – Crews responded Friday to a five-vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer.

The crash happened after 1 p.m. Friday at the 281 north interchange going from San Juan to Pharr.

One person died at the scene.

Five others were taken to a hospital. Their condition is unknown.

Pharr Police Department Sgt. Michael Mendoza said the tractor trailer changes lanes and struck several vehicles. A preliminary investigation shows speed may have been a factor in the crash.

"Be alert. Don't take a chance and get on the interchange at the last minute. That's what causes these accidents. People don't judge the distance properly and end up cutting people off causing accidents," he said.

Northbound traffic is being rerouted. Drivers are advised to find alternate routes.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call 956-787-8477,
