MCALLEN – McAllen residents are requesting the city take action on an abandoned home allegedly being used as an unsupervised party house for teenagers.

Neighbors are concerned if the property isn’t gated off the problems will continue. Resident Marilyn Box lives next door to the property on Northgate Avenue.

“Any property like this that’s been abandoned, anything could happen,” she said.

From the road it looks like an upscale home in the making, but a closer look shows signs of neglect due to all the profanity spray painted all over the house.

Box said she is concerned whoever is going could cause problems at her own house.

“I feel a little uneasy about it and I think some of the neighbors feel concerned too. Because there’s no way to keep anybody from doing whatever they want to with that property,” she said.

Neighbors across the street said they’re more concerned for the teenagers that go there. They said the place is big and secluded enough they don’t think they’ll be able to hear somebody screaming.

Inside the home we found evidence of partying. We saw alcohol bottles, prescription drugs, condoms, cigars and even a small fire.

We also found evidence McAllen police has been inside the house.

The city didn’t respond to our requests for information on the property until crews showed up to board the windows.

McAllen city manager Roy Rodriguez said he ordered crews to board it up on Thursday after receiving complaints. He said they also tried reaching out the owner.

Rodriguez said the city will have to determine whether the house is structurally sound. If it is not, he said it’ll be declared a nuisance property and action will be taken.

The city said they will have to work with the property owner or take them to court to make sure the home is maintained if all previous warnings don’t work.

Neighbors said they’re just glad something was done in time for summer when students are released from the school year.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS checked the status of the home with the Hidalgo County Appraisal District and Tax Office. The house has not been repossessed.

However, they informed thousands are owed in taxes.

We were unsuccessful in trying to reach the owner of the property.

The city added they have not issued any citations against the owners.
