BROWNSVILLE – Families who belong to the Brownsville Independent School District and earn a household income below $54,000 a year could qualify for free help to fill out tax returns.

The United Way has teamed up with the school district to hold a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program through April 16.

Vita is available at all Brownsville ISD Early College High Schools.

The sites are staffed by students who are trained and certified through the IRS to prepare tax returns free of charge.

VITA Coordinator at Brownsville Hannah High School Belinda Morales says the program isn’t just for parents who need to file their tax returns.

“We actually also serve the staff from our campus,” she says. “We have the food service staff, the maintenance staff and there’s even high school students that already have jobs that also file their income taxes.”

Morales says all services are free.

You can call 211 to find out about other VITA sites in Cameron County.
