BROWNSVILLE – As the ports-of-entry continue to have longer wait times than normal, officials say there is a way to cut down commute time.

Local resident Loraine Cuellar says she travels across the border from Brownsville regularly, but in recent weeks she has been stuck for hours.

"It used to move faster, I don't know what's been going on lately," says Cuellar.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to Customs and Border Protection Liaison Elias Rodriguez.

Rodriguez says CBP is now offering the secure electronic network for traveler’s rapid inspection, or ‘Senrti’ card.

"This is a program that provides a dedicated lane to our travelers where the wait times are significantly reduced," he says.

Rodriguez adds the application process takes time.

"Once you've applied, it takes a few months; sometimes weeks, sometimes months, depending on the person. We do have to run a background check on them to make sure they are considered 'trusted travelers’,” says Rodriguez.

Residents who wish to apply for a Sentri card can visit the CBP website.
