San Benito city leaders voted to rename Cesar Chavez Day to Community and Labor Heritage Day.

City leaders said the new name will still recognize the history and contributions of farmworkers in the U.S. The city decided on the new name because of the allegations made against Cesar Chavez, the late civil rights icon accused of sexually abusing young girls and women in a March 2023 New York Times story.

The allegations set off public action to rename holidays and schools named after Chavez.

Community and Labor Heritage Day will be on the Monday after Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The move will give city leaders and some businesses a four-day weekend.

San Benito commissioners will honor the holiday next year.
