LASARA – A Rio Grande Valley community is coming together after the loss of a Lasara family over the weekend.

The family was killed in a head-on crash. Lasara Independent School District is working to help the community.

A driver of an 18 wheeler was driving westbound on Saturday. Authorities on scene said the driver lost control and moved into the other lane.

The Cantu family was traveling in a pickup truck in that lane.

Elizabeth Murad, 37, Luis Cantu, 36, Delroy Cantu, 14, and Luis Cantu Jr., 8, did not survive the crash.

“You can’t promise tomorrow,” Sandra Salinas said. She knew the family well and her son was best friends with Delroy.

“He was always with a smile. He always had a big smile,” she remembered.

Salinas said they were in the same class.

“They’re always together. I mean they’re always playing. He would always say, ‘Hey AJ there’s your mom and there’s your dad,’” she said.

Salinas said the family was always involved in school activities.

Lasara ISD Superintendent Sara Alvarado is preparing for when students go back to school.

“We have reached out already to the neighboring school districts, superintendents. My fellow superintendents have already offered to send their counselors to help us out because we do return to school on Wednesday. We have our district counselor as well, plus one of our principals is a counselor,” she said.

Alvarado and Salinas said everyone in Lasara is like family.

“Our hearts are with them and our prayers are with their families,” Salinas said.

They said they pray something like this never happens again to their small community.

Alvarado said the school district will also get help from the South Texas Grieving Center if the community needs any assistance.
