UPDATE (5/16): Customs and Border Protection says the barriers they set up are serving as an extra layer of defense and security.

According to CBP's statement:

"The periodic utilization of port-hardening materials such as jersey barriers and concertina wires, help CBP to manage traffic flow, while effectively eliminating the ability for a large group of migrants to illegally and forcefully surge through the ports-of-entry."

CBP is strongly asking immigrants to apply for asylum at the port-of-entry and not by force.

HIDALGO – Concrete barriers at the Hidalgo International Bridge have led to some lane closures.

Many people crossing say there are concrete barriers topped with what looks like concertina wire.

Luis Vargas says he crosses from Reynosa once or twice a week.

“On the way back, for the vehicle lines, there is only one lane open. It’s really complicated for drivers to cross over,” says Vargas.

Customs and Border Protection tell us the roadblocks are called jersey barriers.

Only one lane is open for the time being; all four inspection lanes are open.

Vargas tells us he only saw two immigrants waiting at the bridge and a full house inside the office.
