MCALLEN – Safety is a priority for everyone.

When installing cameras at a home or business, you’re taking a step in the right direction, but cyber experts say if you don't follow safety tips you could be giving strangers access to your personal life.

RGV SpyTek has 24 cameras inside and out.

Owner Ric Tamez wants to make sure he sees and knows about everything that happens at his store.

The only problem is that someone else could do the same – and they have.

It happened when the store first opened its doors over a decade ago.

Tamez says he got a call from the man watching him and all that man wanted was for Tamez to know was that he had eyes on him.

Cyber security expert Ray Mendoza says this is common.

"Not just watching, but listening to you as well. Because a lot of these new cameras have built in microphone and speaker," says Mendoza.

Mendoza explained there are thousands of surveillance camera feeds online that anyone can access.

Most of the time, the owners of the cameras are unaware of the intrusion.
