EDINBURG – One Rio Grande Valley fire department is warning residents that fireworks can cause wildfires.

Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider said the cold front that moved into the Valley, as well as higher winds and low humidity, create a dangerous situation.

He said these conditions, along with a spark from fireworks, are the perfect setting for a fire that can spread quickly.

“Any time that there’s high grass, it’s dry. The humidity is low; it’s a mixture for a potential disaster. So we encourage everybody to be extremely safe and keep it away from the high grass,” Snider said.

He mentioned people should use extra caution if they’re going to burn trash over the next few days. He recommends burning trash in a barrel or something similar, to keep any debris from flying away from the blaze.
