Edinburg's football legend, educator, and role model, Richard R. Flores, passed last week at the age of 83.

Flores was inducted into the Texas High School Coach’s Hall of Honor and was even inducted into the Texas High School Athletic Director’s Hall of Honor.

Channel 5 spoke with some fellow coaches about the passing of Flores.

“They loved him,” Flores’ best friend John Lerma said. “They loved to play for him.”

Edinburg Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach, Rene Guzman, remembers the man he called ‘coach’ in the 80s.

Guzman says he still uses what he learned from Flores to this day.

“No matter who I get after, I’ll go up to them, put my arm around them, and I’ll make sure that they know it’s nothing personal, but all I want is the best for them,” Guzman said.

Services for Flores' celebration of life will be held Thursday at Legacy Chapels. Visitations start at 12 p.m., followed by his service.
