A 42-year-old Edinburg man accused of fatally beating his father was found to be incompetent to stand trial, Hidalgo County court records show.

A report also found that it’s unlikely for Francisco Gonzalez Coronado Jr. to “be restored to competency in the foreseeable future,” according to a judge’s order signed on Tuesday.

As previously reported, Coronado was charged with murder after his father, 86-year-old Francisco Coronado Sr., died after his son allegedly assaulted him.

According to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Coronado Sr. in the backyard of a home in the 6500 block of Sharp Road in rural San Carlos on April 15, 2025.

Coronado Sr. was bleeding from his head, nose and mouth. He appeared disoriented, but was able to tell deputies he had been attacked.

Relatives at the scene said Coronado Jr. attacked his father and fled prior to deputies’ arrival.

Coronado Sr. was hospitalized in critical condition with severe head trauma, and a broken nose, cheekbone and jaw. He died days later, the sheriff’s office said.

Coronado Jr. was arrested following the assault on a charge of injury to an elderly person. The charge was upgraded to murder after his father died.

The judge’s order ruled that Coronado Jr. be committed to a state hospital for a period not to exceed 120 days. A hearing was scheduled for April 20, 2026.
