Cameron County drivers said the amount of campaign signs along several roads is creating a hazard.

Drivers on Rangerville Road in Harlingen said the amount of signs is making it hard to see oncoming traffic.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said the department is aware of the complaints. They've received calls about signs in Harlingen, Brownsville and San Benito areas.

“We do get a lot of phone calls from people complaining about the political signs, unfortunately we're very limited because this office does not have any authority over the placement or the regulation of what the contents of the signs," Garza said.

Garza said cities have their own rules when it comes to campaign signs.

“But even those limitations can be superseded by political speech,” Garza said. “It goes back to the original property owner as to what they are allowing to be placed on their signs. Sometimes they rely on campaigns to pick up signs previously placed, and other times depending on the success they are not necessarily in a hurry to go back and try to remove that."

Channel 5 News reached out to the city of Harlingen for comment. A spokesperson said the city hasn’t received formal complaints from drivers about signs in the area.
