WESLACO – The government’s new policy is to ‘catch and return’ meaning people who cross the border illegally will not continue their process in the U.S.

Anyone who comes through the border illegally will have to stay in Mexico during their U.S. immigration process.

The feds say this will help decrease the immigration backlog.

Kirstjen Nielson of the Department of Homeland Security made the announcement on Thursday.

"Individuals arriving in or entering the United States from Mexico illegally or without proper documentation-may be returned to Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings."

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas made a visit to Catholic Charities Respite Center in McAllen to see how this will impact asylum seekers.
