MCALLEN – Former district judge Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado has been sentenced to five years in his federal bribery trial.

Delgado has been free on bond since he was found guilty in July.

He was convicted on eight counts of bribery, conspiracy, Travel Act violations and obstruction of justice.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations was tipped off about Delgado’s crimes in 2008.

According to a criminal complaint, the information came from a confidential FBI source.

They started their investigation in 2016.

Delgado was arrested on Feb. 2, 2018 following that two year investigation.

Later that month, a grand jury decided there was enough evidence in the case to take him to trial just days after the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct suspended him without pay.

Delgado’s state annual salary at the time was $140,000.

In April, he resigned as judge of the 93rd District Court.

In November, voters elected him to 13th Court of Appeals, Place 4 ; he was later suspended from that seat in July.

Shortly after his conviction, Delgado’s attorneys filed a motion for a new hearing in the case; the motion was denied by a judge Tuesday.
