HARLINGEN – The city of Harlingen is set to increase maintenance fees for its streets.

Harlingen city commissioners voted unanimously to increase the current $1 fee Wednesday evening.

The fee was raised to $4.50 for residential areas. Apartment complexes, mobile homes and RV parks will have to pay $2.50.

Fees for commercial buildings also went up to $8.50.

Harlingen assistant city manager Carlos Sanchez told us the change will generate around $1.4 million a year.

“It’s a quality of life issue that addresses one of the biggest needs and concerns here at city hall and public works… The road conditions need to be improved, pot holes and so forth,” he said.

Sanchez said the city has already identified 262 miles of roadway that needs repairs.

The new fees will take effect June 1st and will be reflected on residents’ monthly water bill.
