BROWNSVILLE – JJ Watt’s foundation has helped middle schools across the country afford athletic gear. In order to qualify for funding, schools have to submit a request on the foundation website. Months ago, the Jubilee Leadership Academy in Brownsville applied for a donation.

“I saw there was an opportunity and there was a need for our middle school program,” said Jubilee Academy regional athletic coordinator Deira Glover.

Weeks later the foundation contacted Jubilee with some good news. The Watt Foundation donated $8,905 to help buy uniforms for athletes in football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, cross country and track.

“It means a lot to us because all the sports get to have jerseys,” said Jubilee Academy seventh grader Danna Rodriguez.

“Not only for volleyball but for all sports,” said Jubilee Academy seventh grader Elise Fourt.

The donation has inspired students in ways that go beyond sports.

“He’s a really good role model to me,” said Jubilee Academy eighth grader Max Barraza. “I like what he’s doing and I want to give back to people in need.”

Watt’s foundation has donated a total of about $96,000 to 12 Valley schools this year.
