BROWNSVILLE - A Mercedes man will spend the next 20 years behind bars. Jimmy Henry Cavazos was convicted of murder, intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and driving while intoxicated.

In October, Cavazos crashed into another vehicle in Harlingen at the intersection of Van Buren Avenue and North 3rd Street. The collision killed 32-year-old Elisha Englebert Elizondo, who was following his wife home in a separate vehicle. She had just crossed the intersection, when the wreck happened.

In a press release, Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz stated, “On that fateful day in October, a wife lost her husband and their newborn child lost his father because of the irresponsible acts of Jimmy Henry Cavazos."

Prosecutors said Cavazos was heavily intoxicated and speeding.

Below is the complete statement from the Cameron County District Attorney's Office:

On Tuesday, May 30, 2017 Jimmy Henry Cavazos of Mercedes Texas, was sentenced to serve 20 years in the Texas Department of Corrections facility, on the charges of Intoxication Manslaughter W/ Vehicle, Murder, and Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or more.

Prosecuting any case is never easy, but there is something particularly troubling about dealing with Intoxication Manslaughter cases. Victims never expect to not make it home because of the recklessness of someone who is driving while driving under the influence of alcohol. On a

Sunday afternoon, on October 2nd 2016, Elisha Englebert Elizondo never made it home to his family after a long day of work. As per the police reports, Mr. Elizondo was driving home and following his wife in a separate vehicle. As she drove ahead of him, she safely crossed the intersection of W. Van Buren Street and 3rd in Harlingen Texas. Mr. Elizondo was not as fortunate. While crossing the same street trailing his wife, Mr. Elizondo was fatally struck by Jimmy Henry Cavazos, who was operating his vehicle while heavily intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed. On that fateful day in October, a wife lost her husband and their newborn child lost his father because of the irresponsible acts of Jimmy Henry Cavazos.

Prosecuting this case for the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office was Assistant District Attorney Pete Gilman. I would like to also thank the Harlingen Police Department for all their assistance during the course of this investigation.
