McAllen Officer Wounded while Responding to Burglary Call

MCALLEN – A homeowner has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant after trying to assist an officer who was attempting to arrest a burglary suspect.

It happened on the 3200 block of Guadalupe Street in McAllen at 12:11 a.m. Monday.

The homeowner had returned to his home to find a male suspect inside. After a struggle with the homeowner, the suspect escaped running down the street.

A responding officer engaged in a foot chase with the suspect and attempted to arrest the suspect in a nearby open field.

According to a press release, the homeowner drew his handgun and fired towards the ground area where the officer and suspect were struggling.

The gunshot hit the responding officer on his right arm.

Both the burglary suspect and the homeowner were detained.

The burglary suspect was identified as 39-year-old Ricardo Villalon of Sullivan City. He was charged with burglary, evading arrest and resisting arrest.

The homeowner, 30-year-old Michael Garza, was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant.

The responding officer, Officer Edgar Devora, was transported to the hospital and released Monday morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
