SAN JUAN – The San Juan police chief said their department needs the public's help to keep drug dealers out of their community.

On Friday, two people were arrested on suspicion of dealing crack cocaine out a home on the 600 block of West Mesquite.

A neighbor, who we will call Celeste for her own protection, said she grew up and lives in the neighborhood.

"There could be a shooting, and that's why it's something serious to worry about," she said. “It's scary and dangerous because there are kids playing outside on their bikes, not knowing what kind of people are around.”

San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the arrests were the result of an investigation that began last November. He said four people were arrested after purchasing narcotics at the home.

"We garnered enough probable cause for us to make sure that we executed the warrant, and make sure that we dismantled this place," Gonzalez explained. “The individuals were selling this controlled substance in our area.”

Gonzalez said the department was tipped to the illicit activity by an anonymous call to their crimes stoppers tip line.

He told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the public's help is key to keep these illegal activities from reemerging in this neighborhood.

"They are the ones out there that live there, that see it 24, 7, that see the traffic coming and going and see the individuals walking down the streets,” he said.  

“Call us. That's the only way we are going to prevent this from happening," Gonzalez urged.

The police chief said educating children in the community about the dangers of drug use can also help keep drugs out of their lives.

Celeste added she's grateful the arrests were made.

Gonzalez said they’re investigating four other homes in San Juan known for drugs sales as part of Operation Curbside.
