OSHA reminding employers of dangers of working outdoors during extreme heat
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is reminding employers to prioritize the well-being of their outdoor employees in the scorching heat.
According to OSHA, three out of every four heat-related deaths happen within the first week on the job.
Roofers are especially busy after recent severe weather, and the job is tough enough as it is.
OSHA suggests allowing new employees to acclimate to their surroundings before diving in — typically a 28-day period for adjusting to the climate.
Workers need to remember the big three: rest, water, and shade, OSHA added.
Employers could face consequences if an employee gets sick or hurt from the heat, and an investigation finds the employer at fault.
