Parents Raise Concerns over Heavy Backpacks

WESLACO - Some Rio Grande Valley parents are worried about the weight their children lug around to and from and during school hours.

It all started when parents from the district reached out to Texas State Representative Terry Canales with their concern: How their child's school back pack was causing pain. 

A laptop, binders, notebooks, and sometimes even a cello, this is what seventh grader Ivanna Leal carries to school.

Representative Terry Canales sent a letter to the McAllen superintendent seeking clarity on their policy for lockers and what can be done about kids carrying too much.
