TAMAULIPAS, Mex. – Starting Friday, drivers in Matamoros will have access to police escorts to two destinations, according to a city spokesperson.

Under the program, caravans will depart from two locations in Matamoros on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Police escorts will travel with drivers to Reynosa and Ciudad Victoria.

Similar efforts have existed before. A spokesperson for the state police said it comes during the higher traffic holiday travel times.

In Reynosa, a similar program began three weeks ago. Services there run to Matamoros and Ciudad Victoria.

"Insecurity is like Russian Roulette," said a driver from Monterrey, who was visiting Hidalgo Friday. 

"Nothing is certain," he said, speaking about the highways in Northeast Mexico.

A state spokesperson said there is no set deadline for the program to end.

From Ciudad Victoria to Reynosa

Friday - 3:30 p.m.
Saturday - 8:00 a.m.
