SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A $15.5 million construction project for a road that will eventually lead to the second causeway to South Padre Island is in its final stages.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation says the third and final stage of construction on State Highway 106, or General Brand Road, is expected to be complete in September.

The road is open to traffic up to Buena Vista Road, near the Laguna Atascosa Refuge.
