Suspect Who Allegedly Assaulted Officer with SUV in Custody

UPDATE (5/7): Jose Cruz Lopez Jr. was caught at a McAllen apartment after being on the run for a day.

He was wanted for allegedly running over a Mission police officer.

Police say a woman who was also in the SUV at the time of the incident was also arrested.

Lopez is still currently in jail.

The officer who was injured in the incident is now recovering at home.

MISSION – Mission police are searching for a suspect in the assault of an officer.

Authorities say 33-year-old Jose Cruz Lopez Jr. ran over an officer’s leg, pinning him to the ground.

It happened after 12:30 a.m. Friday on Hidalgo Street when an officer spotted Lopez fail to stop at a stop sign.

Lt. Jody Tittle, with the Mission Police Department, tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the officer recognized Lopez after pulling him over.

The officer got Lopez out of his SUV and when he was handcuffing him he allegedly put up a fight.

Tittle says Lopez was able to get back into his vehicle and put it into reverse.

That's when he allegedly ran over the officer's leg and shoulder and drove off.

The officer is reportedly doing OK. He was released from the hospital Friday morning.

Officials say Lopez has threatened law enforcement in the past and is considered to be dangerous.

The suspect is driving a white Cadillac SRX with paper plates.
