UPDATE: After this story aired, Harlingen city commissioners unanimously voted on creating four speed humps that will go up on Tucker Road, Third Street, Marshall Avenue and South Tamm Lane.

Commissioners with the city of Harlingen are meeting Wednesday to decide if they’ll crack down on speeders by adding more speed humps across the city.

Residents across several neighborhoods in the city say the humps are needed.

"Especially now with the time change,” Harlingen resident George Perez said. “By 5:30, 6 o'clock the sun is already setting it's already kinda dark and we’re still getting those people coming through." 

This effort is being spearheaded by the Harlingen District 5 Commissioner Rene Perez, whose been able to add five speed humps to problem areas in his district since May.

Perez said he's hoping to add four more.

“This is what they want,” Perez said. “They want to be safe in their neighborhood, they want their children to be out here playing in the streets, not having to have to be worried about getting run over. The speed humps are a great deterrent for that." 

The city commissioners added that they hope the speed humps will also deter drivers who are racing.

A spokesperson with the city says 12 speed humps were added this year throughout the city at $3,000 per location.
