MCALLEN - A McAllen couple is recovering after reportedly being shot in Reynosa.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon on Blvrd El Maestro in Reynosa.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS is still trying to get confirmation from official sources on both sides of the border on what exactly happened.

Family members, however, confirmed both U.S. citizens and McAllen residents were shot south of the border.

The nephew of Luis and Alejandra Aleman said both are being treated at Texas hospitals. He said Luis suffered gunshots to the hand and foot. The woman wasn’t seriously injured.

The nephew said the couple was in Reynosa dropping off a family member who had been in the Valley for the weekend. He said the vehicle came under gunfire when they were heading back to the international bridge.

Luis Aleman’s brother said they are trying to get in contact with the U.S. embassy in Mexico City.

“We are trying to communicate with the embassy… The shots all were made to kill. None was made as a stop or warning,” he said.

It’s still unclear if the couple was targeted, or caught in the cross fire.

According to Mexican media, the shots came from members of the Mexican military.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS has not been able to reach anyone from the Mexican government for comment.

U.S. State Department spokesperson sent the following statement in regards to the incident:

“We have seen media reports of a shooting incident involving a U.S. citizen near the border in Tamaulipas. The safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad is one of the State Department’s highest priorities. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment.”
