WESLACO– A Rio Grande Valley family is bracing the cold as freezing temperatures arrive Wednesday night.

Maria Hernandez says she’s lived in a colonia in Weslaco for years. She says without a heating system, every winter is a struggle.

“Right now, what I’m doing is cooking beans so the house can warm up a little bit,” she says. “Later, I plan on marking more food at night. It’ll turn the oven on so the house can warm up a little,” says Hernandez.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez looked into what other options Hernandez has if the cold is too much to bear.

Several Valley organizations are opening their doors to those looking for shelter from the cold.
