RIO GRANDE VALLEY- With House democrats moving quickly on an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, a Valley college professor is clarifying the process.

Dr. Kevin Holton with South Texas College says impeachment doesn't automatically mean being removed from office.

"That's rare, that hasn't happened at all with respect to the president," Dr. Holton said. "There's only been two presidents that have been impeached in the past, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Neither was convicted and removed from office."

Dr. Holton explained the meaning behind impeachment.

He says it's something similar to an indictment in court.

The Constitution allows for the House of Representatives to bring formal charges against the president.

The House acts as the accuser and a trial can be held in the Senate.

The House then sends managers over to act as prosecuting attorneys, with the president having his own defense team.

The Senate decides based on the evidence provided, if the president is guilty of what he's being impeached for.

The Senate needs a 2/3 vote to convict the president officially.
