WESLACO – The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday the arrest of Claudio Gomez, 21, of Monte Alto.

According to a release, on Wednesday the sheriff’s office received a report about a Facebook video of a man torturing a dog.

Investigators reviewed the video and observed “a man had hung a small puppy by his neck from a tree,” according to the release.

Authorities obtained the address where the video was made, where they met with Gomez.

The 21-year-old later provided a voluntary statement admitting to “hanging a dog that didn't belong to him out of boredom."

Gomez was arrested and charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals, a state jail felony, and was issued a $10,000 bond.

Correction: The story previous misquoted Gomez's statement saying he hung his dog. It was incorrect. The dog belongs to a different owner.
