Julio Diaz was found guilty Thursday on all charges in connection with the murder of a McAllen man outside a Masonic lodge.

Jurors returned with the verdict after about 35 minutes of deliberations.

Diaz was found guilty of murder in connection with the deadly July 2023 shooting of 55-year-old Robert Wise, a McAllen Freemason. Diaz was also found guilty of two arson charges linked to two Masonic lodge fires in McAllen and Weslaco.

In their closing arguments, prosecutors told jurors on Thursday the evidence proves Diaz shot and killed Wise, a member of the Free Mason Lodge. They pointed to surveillance video, cell phone evidence and videos they said Diaz recorded himself.

Prosecutors also argued the evidence ties Diaz to the arson cases, asking jurors to find him guilty on all three charges, adding that Diaz targeted Wise because of his hatred for the Freemasons.

The defense called Wise's death heartbreaking but told jurors Diaz was suffering from delusions, saying he believed he was fighting a non-human threat.

The defense asked the jury to find Diaz not guilty, arguing he did not intend to kill a human being.

Sentencing for Diaz was set for Sept. 21, and the judge will impose the sentence.
