Alamo man pleads guilty in connection with 2022 murder

An Alamo man pleaded guilty on Monday to a murder charge in connection with a deadly shooting that happened on March 2022, Hidalgo County court records show.

Eric Gonzalo Hernandez was set to go to trial when he pleaded guilty, records show.

According to previous reports, Hernandez was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Javier Cruz of Mexico.

Deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 block of Sioux Road in rural Alamo on March 3 and found Cruz’s body with apparent gunshot wounds.

"Through the course of the investigation, Sheriff’s Office Investigators made contact with several witnesses who stated that Javier was shot by 39-year-old Eric Gonzalo Hernandez, of Alamo, Texas, after an argument," according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office. "Witness stated they heard gunshots and observed Javier fall to the ground while Eric left running from location."

Hernandez was arrested on March 5, 2022, and has been in custody ever since. His bond is currently set at $1million.

Sentencing for Hernandez is set for Jan. 7, 2026.
