BROWNSVILLE – Brownsville fire crews recovered a body from a resaca Monday morning.

The area is close to the Waterside Apartments, near Boca Chica and Billy Mitchell. Brownsville firefighters sent a boat into the water to recover a woman’s body.

A passerby spotted the body on the opposite of the resaca around 10:30 a.m.

Brownsville and EMS responders arrived and deployed their drone for verification, since it was difficult to tell from the distance.

Once they got the confirmation, they called in Brownsville investigators to the scene.

An autopsy was ordered.

Brownsville Police spokesman J.J. Trevino said there were no visible signs of foul play. The woman was identified, but her name isn’t being released until her family is notified.

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board, which is in charge or managing water in the three large resaca systems, said the resaca where the woman was found belongs to Irrigation District Number 5.

They added resacas around the city can vary from three feet deep to nine feet deep at any given point.

Trevino said it’s not against the law to swim in a resaca but it’s not something that’s recommended.

“You have to use a little bit of common sense. I don’t know how clean the resacas are. I don’t know if there’s whatever type of mud under there that you might get stuck,” Trevino said.

Martha Gonzalez lives near the resaca. She said she isn’t scared after what happened.

“Because it’s about being careful and watching over my kids when they get close to the resaca,” she said.

Police aren’t saying if the woman was a resident at the apartment complex. EMS crews believe the body was in the water overnight.
