BROWNSVILLE – Brownsville merchants are being given some extra time to adjust to the changes coming to the revised bag ordinance.

After April 22nd, it will be up to merchants to decide if they will hand out paper bags or reusable bags.

As of Feb. 26, merchants stopped charging the $1 fee for unlimited plastic bags.

The attorney general’s office sued the city over the fee calling it a tax.

The state dropped the suit when the city agreed to drop the charge.
