Brownsville Officials Reviewing Plastic Bag Ban Following Court Ruling
BROWNSVILLE – Brownsville city officials are now reviewing the plastic bag ban after the Texas Supreme Court ruled it illegal to ban single-use bags.
According to state health and safety codes, the sale or use of a container can’t be prohibited unless authorized by state law.
Brownsville’s plastic bag ban was put into effect in 2011.
People who chose to use plastic bags at checkouts were charged an environmental fee of $1.00.
The city did away with the fee and the plastic bags altogether after the attorney general sued the city over the issue.
