No explosives were found on an IDEA Riverview student after he claimed to have a grenade, the Brownsville Police Department said.
The student, who is a minor, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with making a false alarm and threat, a department spokesperson said.
IDEA Public Schools first announced the incident in a letter sent to campus parents on Tuesday afternoon, a copy of which was sent to Channel 5 News.
According to the letter, IDEA Riverview staff members were informed that a student was making threats against the school’s college prep campus right before dismissal.
"IDEA Riverview is aware of an arrest involving a student for making an alleged threat against our campus earlier this afternoon," IDEA Public Schools said in a statement to Channel 5 News. "Local authorities were contacted via iWatchTexas to assist in the investigation. All students and staff are safe. Since this is an open investigation, we cannot comment further. All further questions should be directed to the Brownsville Police Department."
Channel 5 News reached out to the Brownsville Police Department, and a spokesperson said "no explosives were located on his person."
