Brownsville ISD offered condolences to the family and friends of their late school board president.

Brownsville ISD School Board President Erasmo Castro died on Saturday following a battle with cancer.

“The entire BISD community is mourning a loss of a great leader and a huge advocate,” Brownsville ISD School Board Vice President Daniella Lopez-Valdez said.

Castro was elected to the school board in Nov. 2024. Lopez-Valdez said he always focused on the students in the district.

“It was very much about making sure the kids had access to resources. While he was there, he was very interested in the food that we were providing,” Lopez-Valdez said. “He was trying to make sure our kids had healthy options, and he was very much in making sure our kids had pride for their community.”

On Monday, Castro’s family said on social media that viewing services will be Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Funeraria del Angel in Brownsville.

Funeral services will begin on Thursday at 10 a.m., and the burial will be held at 11 a.m. at the same location.
