Edinburg family grateful to be alive following house fire
A Hidalgo County family is without a home following a fire on Friday morning.
Investigators believe an air conditioning unit sparked the fire.
The Rodriguez family wasn't able to save anything, but they said all that matters to them is that they're safe and together.
Charred wood, melted metal and the smell of smoke still lingers in the air. All reminders of just how fast this Val Verde Vista Home went up in flames.
"In less than three minutes, the house didn't exist anymore," Norma Montes said.
The home was already engulfed when fire crews showed up. The cause is believed to be from a mini-split AC unit in the room of 15-year-old Miguel Rodriguez.

"I was just getting ready in the kitchen. I was just chilling on my phone and then the air gets really hard to breathe," Miguel said.
That's when he ran into his room and saw it filled with thick black smoke.
"Then I went out and looked at the air in the room. It was completely on fire, and I have a broken foot, but I ran," Montes said.
Montes says after running outside, she ran back inside, hoping to save what she could.
"I wanted to save something," Montes said. "It took everything, nothing was left, no memories."
Miguel Rodriguez Landeros was on his way to work when the fire happened. He is the family's sole provider, selling fruits and snacks on the street.
He's not working while he and his family work on rebuilding their home.
Even after losing everything, the family says they're thankful no one was hurt and hopes others can learn from what happened.
"Just be careful where you connect the air conditioner and the heater, don't connect it all together," Montes said.
The family will be staying at a hotel for the next few days before moving into a short-term rental with help from the county.
