Harlingen Medical Center received a 5-star rating award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

HMC is one of 24 hospitals in Texas and the only in the county to receive the award, according to a press release.

The hospital rating is based on data measuring five aspects of quality of care including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care as reported by CMS' Hospital Compare tool.

Hospitals are rated on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest and three as the most common, the news release stated.

When asked how the hospital persevered, especially through the coronavirus pandemic, HMC’s Chief Nurse Amy Flores said it’s because of the hospital staff.

“We make sure that we round up our staff and that we do keep up with them and know what's going on day-to-day,” Flores said.

Harlingen Medical Center CEO Matt Wolthoff pointed to the hospital’s culture.

“We really try to create an atmosphere as a family, and I think it's engrained in Harlingen Medical Center’s cultural to treat each other like family and really take care of each other.”
