WESLACO - A Rio Grande Valley woman is urging others to be cautious if they ever try to sell items online.

Weslaco resident Joyce Rich turned to the Internet when looking to sell her electric scooter for $900.  She said it started out as a normal transaction in Craigslist.

“Very friendly, you know, ‘Hi, I’m Bill. I’m interested’ and stuff,” she said.

Rich said a potential buyer tried to offer here a phony cashier’s check.

“I really felt like someone came into my house and messed me up,” she said.

She said the man offered her more than what she had asked.

“I’m going to send you a cashier’s check more for the amount you asked so you can pay the rest to the movers,” she said.

When Rich checked her mail she noticed a letter from the potential buyer, but she noticed something off after opening it up and looking at the payment.

“The check was $1,930. Now, I realized right away. I said, ‘This is way too much,’” she said.

The buyer told Rich the extra money was to be given to movers for the scooter. That’s when Rich decided to cancel the whole transaction.

It turned out the cashier’s check was counterfeit. CHANNEL 5 NEWS took the check, out of Alabama, to the Better Business Bureau in Weslaco.

“Many of the captions are in both English and Spanish. That’s the first time I’ve seen that,” BBB South Texas regional office president Dolores Salinas said.

She said there are a few things you should verify before trying to cash it.

“The best thing you can do is report it to the bank… So that they are aware this is going on,” she said.

Salinas said banks can also verify the authenticity of cashier’s check.

Rich said she’s unsure if she will continue using the Internet to sell her scooter. If she does, she’ll be extra vigilant.
