PHARR – A local mother claims a school district failed to notify her when her 13-year-old son walked off school property.

Stephanie Martinez says her son has walked off campus five times in the past, but she still wants to be notified if it happens.

Martinez says she had no idea where her son was for eight to nine hours.

"Us parents we work throughout the whole morning throughout the day we leave the kids in the schools hands," she says.

She says her son walked seven miles from the campus in Edinburg to their home in Pharr.

Martinez filed a police report with the Edinburg Police Department and went back to the school demanding answers.

She was arrested and spent two days in jail on an assault charge against a peace officer.

In a statement, the Edinburg Consolidated School District said, “the district diligently addresses all matters regarding students in accordance with district policy and procedures. The district does not comment on student matters”.

Martinez says she could have handled the situation better, but will not stop fighting for change at the school campus.
