New Alamo Police Unit to Rid Streets of Drugs
ALAMO – An outcry from a community has a Rio Grande Valley police chief stepping up. He's hoping a newly formed task force will help ease concerns.
On Friday, around 6:00 a.m., the new Major Crimes Response team hit the streets of Alamo and conducted their first search warrant.
Alamo police said the two suspected drug traffickers lived at a home on 8th Street and Duranta Avenue, only blocks away from the police station.
The new major crimes response unit is a three-man team assisted by the San Juan Law Enforcement Emergency Regional Response Team.
Alamo Police Chief Baudelio Castillo was on scene with a message for others who break the law.
"I just want to let the public know any illegal activity, any narcotics being sold in our city limits, we'll be knocking on your front door,” he warned.
The lights and noise were seen and heard throughout the neighborhood.
Air Force Veteran David Reyna laughs at the site because he's lived in Alamo all his life.
"Here in Alamo, there are a lot of drugs,” he said.
Reyna said he knows what goes on here.
"They need to be stopped because, you know, it’s the kids they are poisoning," he said.
Reyna tells us a new task force is needed and wants it to stay.
"It’s been like that all the time. So, I hope you know they keep on doing it, I mean, regularly so everything stops,” he said.
Castillo said he knows the concerns of his community and hopes this is just the beginning of making them feel safer.
He explained the task force was made possible by funding through asset forfeiture.
The police chief said he expects to have the team for next couple of years.
