Proposed $34 million project would widen FM 88 in Elsa
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking input from the public on a proposed road widening project.
If approved, FM 88 in Elsa would be widened to four lanes with a continuous turning lane between Monte Cristo Road and 5th Avenue.
The $34 million project would alleviate traffic in the area, and be paid for with state and federal grants.
“It would enhance capacity and safety, and enhance mobility in this area,” TxDOT spokesperson Ray Pedraza said.
There are currently no pedestrian accommodations along certain sections of FM 88, and the project would add sidewalks to FM 88.
“We are also seeing average daily traffic in this area increase, so we are planning for the future,” Pedraza said.
According to Pedraza, only about an acre of right of way would be acquired for the project.
“No displacement of residential or commercial structures is anticipated at this time,” Pedraza said.
TxDOT is holding several public meetings for people to provide input and learn about the project. A schedule of the hearing can be found on TxDOT's website.
