The city of McAllen announced they saw historic sales tax revenue earnings for 2024.

McAllen City Manager Isaac Tawil said the relationship between Mexico and McAllen played a big role in the city's historic earnings.

“There continues to be an excitement about the binational economy that we enjoy,” Tawil said. “We just got our February sales tax allocation, which would be our share of the state's December 2024 sales tax."

The Dec. 2024 sales tax allocation shows that McAllen saw a record-breaking 12% increase from Dec. 2023.

Tawil said retailers in the McAllen city limits earned $96.8 million dollars total in sales tax revenue for the city in 2024. That represents $4.8 billion in retail sales overall in 2024.

“We work hard with our neighbors in Mexico, recognizing that our economy here on the border is unique and that it's binational,” Tawil said.

According to Tawil, McAllen opened up an international relations department in 2024.

“We meet with the consuls on a regular basis, we engage with our partners in Mexico and our partners in the United States to make sure we're presenting local retailers every opportunity to capitalize on what McAllen has to offer,” Tawil said.

While the city says they're concerned about potential tariffs and its impact locally, McAllen officials said they promise to continue supporting local businesses by spotlighting them and keeping a good relationship with Mexico.
