STC students helping rebuild Sullivan City home destroyed in fire
A Sullivan City woman could have a new home by Christmas thanks to a group of STC students.
Estela Cadena’s home of 15 years was destroyed in a fire back in September.
“I was very sad, “Cadena said. “I felt alone. I have no one and my entire house burnt down.”
Cadena said she was in a spot she never thought she'd be in, and lost everything.
“All the pictures of my kids and my husband,” Cadena said. “I am a widow, and I have his memories of my kids and my husband, and now I have nothing left."
Cadena had been living in her car shortly after the fire, and is now in an apartment where she said she can barely cover her rent.
Cadena said she went to city hall to see if the city offered any services to help her recover.
“I went to ask for help to ask if they can clean my house or whatever they can do,” Cadena said. “Mr. Ramirez was there, and he heard. The police were not able to help, but Mr. Ramirez is helping me, and he promised to help me."
Jose Ramirez doesn't work with the city, but he was at city hall when he overheard Cadena’s pleas.
“She was crying in city hall, something was telling me that I needed to help her," Ramirez said.
Ramirez is also a board member for STC and the owner of a construction company. He took her story to students taking electrician technology classes, and 10 students stepped up to put their skills to work free of cost.
Ramirez is providing the construction materials through his company for free, and the students are doing all the electrical work under the eye of their professor.
Cadena said she is thankful that the community came together to help her rebuild her home, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
