Voters in western Hidalgo County will get to decide if they want to create two new emergency service districts.

The creation of both districts would bring more fire and emergency medical services to rural areas, as well as more taxes.

Hidalgo County Precinct 3, which covers western Hidalgo County, is the only precinct in the county without an emergency service district.

The precinct currently pays private companies to cover the area.

Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Chief of Staff Jorge Arcuate said the contract cost of the private service isn't sustainable, especially as the area continues to grow.

“Right now, the current contract is covering this area for about $70,000 a month," Arcuate said.

The contract used to be paid with Covid funding that no longer exists. Now, the alternative is tax dollars.

If approved, the new ESDs would add an extra tax line for residents. It’s why the election is being called.

If approved by voters, Arcaute said he estimates the tax rate for each district would be two to three and a half cents.

The election will be held on Saturday, May 3.

One emergency service district would be responsible for fire services, and the other would be responsible for EMS.

Residents will vote on them separately.
