Weekend storm blows roof off blind San Benito man's home
A San Benito man lost his home of 25 years on Saturday after a storm ripped the roof off his mobile home on Country Boy Road near San Jose Ranch Road.
Rudy Cortez, 42, is blind and said escaping the storm was one of the scariest moments of his life.
“I was asleep. I just felt I heard the thunder. Then I heard the wind shift and woke me up,” Cortez said. “The house shook; it jumped up three, four, five times, and I just noticed that the rain started hitting me in the face.”
Two of his nieces, ages 15 and 13, were inside with him at the time.

"I just heard crying, screaming and crying. And my niece came, banged on my door, and said, 'tio, the roof is gone, the roof is caving in,'" Cortez said.
The 15-year-old was hurt after debris hit her. She was taken to the hospital but has since been released. Both girls are now staying with their mother.
Cortez is currently staying at a motel for a week.
"But after that, who knows?" Cortez said.
A local church is now stepping up to help families impacted by the storm. Iglesia Vino Nuevo Para Las Naciones in San Benito has opened its doors to anyone who needs a safe place to stay after losing their home.
"We have more than 100 cots set up and blankets to provide shelter for these families who are in that city," Pastor Yesenia Quevedo said.
The church has already helped about 150 people with food and other supplies since the storm.
"If you can save that money on a hotel and come here instead, we'll provide you with food and the necessary care, and the center will be open," Quevedo said.
The church is asking for donations of ice, water, diapers, and canned food to keep helping those in need.
Cortez said the support from the community is helping him stay strong.
“I'll never block a blessing. So whatever comes my way, I'll accept it gladly," Cortez said.
Church leaders said their doors will remain open 24/7 for anyone who needs a safe place to stay.
