MCALLEN – A local man says he is more vigilant after being a victim of credit card abuse.

Police say they arrested the suspect involved on Sunday.

Lieutenant Joel Morales, a spokesperson for the McAllen Police Department, says credit card abuse is when a card is used without the authorization of the owner, generally through use of stolen personal information.

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey asked the McAllen Police Department for tips on how to avoid identity theft.

Morales advises residents to always protect credit card information.

“You should set up your credit card with your credit card company and have alerts on it,” he says.

Morales adds, residents who suspect they have been a victim of identity theft to immediately call authorities.
