BROWNSVILLE – The family of a fallen ICE agent was in federal court Monday to hear the sentences of the seven convicted in an ambush that happened in Feb. 2011.

The relatives of ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata were in Washington, D.C. for the sentences this week.

Mother of the ICE agent, Mary Zapata, spoke to CHANNEL 5 NEWS about those sentences.

Zapata said she’s upset only two of the seven suspects that killed her son received life sentences.

On Monday, Jose Emmanuel Garcia Sota and Jesus Ivan Quezada Pina were sentenced to life in prison for killing the special agent.

U.S. Attorney General Spokesperson William Miller told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the five others convicted in this case were sentenced to 35, 34, 30, 28 and 12 years in prison.

Miller added they will all be subject to deportation following their prison terms.

Zapata said while her son chose a life of service, these men chose a life of crime.

Now she questions what message the U.S. government is sending to others about crimes against federal agents.

The special agent and his partner, Victor Avila, were ambushed on a highway in San Luis Potosi by Zeta Cartel members.

The agents were headed to Mexico City on official business in an SUV bearing diplomatic plates.

Zapata told CHANNEL 5 NEWS she hopes if and when these men are released from prison, they will have to answer to Mexican authorities for their crimes there.
