WESLACO – The financial futures of many employees are left hanging in the balance as thousands of federal agents work without pay.

KRGV’s Sierra Pizarro spoke with a border security employee who is going through a second layoff while being employed by the government.

“It's different because it's right around the holidays. Therefore, it affects a lot of people. People have done shopping, they're broke, and now we don't know if we're going to get paid,” she says.

The money she lost in the 2013 shutdown was paid back to her but this time, she’s unsure if she’ll receive the same treatment.

There is a possible temporary fix for missed earnings. The Texas Workforce Commission considers federal workers affected by the government shutdown to be laid off from their jobs.

This means they can apply for unemployment on the website or by calling 1-800-939-6631.
