EDINBURG – One in three people in the Rio Grande Valley are diagnosed with diabetes.

Local medical students are learning how to treat these patients with more than just medicine.

KRGV’s Tim Smith spoke with local medical students who are working in a group, which includes Dr. Monzer Yazji, using a holistic approach to diabetes and treatment.

“It is a big deal because if it's not controlled, it can lead to other complications that can be life-altering or life-threatening,” explains Oceania University of Medicine medical student Niempa Bacani.

Bacani lost her father due to complications from diabetes several years ago, which played a big role in her decision to attend medical school and doing her internal medicine rotation with South Texas Health System Hospitals.

The group is hopeful with these methods diabetes will begin to level off or even drop.
